Europe's newest theme park, Space Park Bremen, was to open officially to the public today, February 12. The $300 million project is anchored by Space Center, a 60,000-square-foot indoor park built within former a shipyard building on the Wieser River in northern Germany.

Galaxie Express at Space Park BremenThe space-themed park blends science fiction with contemporary science. Attractions include "Star Trek: Borg Encounter," a 4-D theater presentation and "Stargate SG-3000," a simulator ride. Yet the park also offers "Mission Control," an interactive walk-through developed by a local aerospace firm which will display news and images from current and upcoming space missions.

Perhaps the most amibitious attraction may be "Galaxie Express," an indoor Mack coaster incorporating on-ride "virtual reality" video display monitors. (Pictured at right. Other attractions include a space shot drop ride, IMAX theater and a kids' play area. Outside the Space Center, the complex includes a movie multiplex and hotel. A retail shopping plaza remains under development.

Space Park offers more information for visitors on its website, including official operating hours.
