Spider-Man Arrives in Japan in January

Universal Studios Japan: Universal has launched a Web site (pun intended, I guess) to announce the arrival of "The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man" ride at its Osaka park in January, 2004.

Universal Orlando's "Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man," Theme Park Insider readers' favorite ride since it got listed on the site, is finally getting cloned at another Universal park.

Sorry, California, the ride is coming to Universal Studios Japan, where it will debut on January 23, 2004.

Universal's set up a faux "Daily Bugle" Web site to announce the ride's arrival -- http://www.usj.co.jp/SPM/index.html (The site is in Japanese. You can Babelfish it here, but it is a pretty ugly translation.)

[Full disclosure: Universal links to a certain theme park Web site in promoting the new Spider-Man ride. I first found the Daily Bugle site when I noticed referrers in the TPI log files earlier this week.]

No!!!!!!!!!! Spider-man should be a one of a kind ride! No offense but I know it is inconvenient for the Japanese to travel to Orlando but, Spider-man should be a one of a kind ride. IOA may lose profit now because the ride has been cloned. At least have something similar but not as good.

There are minor differences between the Florida and Japanese version--not counting the Japanese soundtrack, there's supposedly a double-sided loading station--meaning the Japanese SCOOPS open on both sides. Also rumor had it that the video footage would be displayed using digital projectors instead of regular film projectors at IOA--or did I read this wrong--can anyone confirm?

How could they do this?! Spider-man is a one of a kind, NOT a two of a kind! They shouldn't clone it, even if they both are universal parks, it will definetely have an impact on IOA.

How?

How much cross-traffic is there between Orlando and Japanese theme parks? Maybe, *maybe* there is slight cross-traffic between Japan and L.A. (there's nowhere near what there was two decades ago), but I suspect that there's near zilch between Orlando and Japan.

A Spidey in Japan does not detract from Spidey in Orlando one whit.

Sorry, I was a little edgy when you called me one wit. No worries then.

To me, digital images+ spider-man= DOWN TIME. If the projectors are digital, the ride needs more computers which means that there is an increased chance of the ride shuting down mostly due to computer errors. The digital projectors and the new disign of the SCOOP will make the ride too complex. This means the computers will need to moniter more things. The computers could misscommunicate more often and cause more downtime. The ride is just too complex. Can anyone agree with me on this one?

Has anyone been on this ride? How is it? Is it as good as IOA?

Why is Back To The Future in the San Francisco section of the park? I think the location is kind of odd.

Umm, wasn't Hill Valley (a *great* name, by the way) supposed to be in California? That's what the DeLorean's plates said, if I remember. Although the film was shot in SoCal, it could have just as easily been a Northern California town.

Mr. Niles, just in case you didn't know, this ride isn't on the attraction list for the Universal Studios Japan section on this site.
