2009 Best Ride in America Tournament, round two: Twilight Zone Tower of Terror bracket

March 27, 2009, 7:15 AM · Welcome to the third day of the second round in the 2009 Best Ride in America tournament on Theme Park Insider.

Yesterday, in the most heated voting of the tournament, Universal Studios Florida's Men in Black Alien Attack eliminated Disneyland's Indiana Jones Adventure. In another tight battle, Soarin' Over California from Disney's California Adventure held off SheiKra from Busch Gardens Africa. Cedar Point's Millennium Force and Expedition Everest from Disney's Animal Kingdom also advanced.

Today, top seed Twilight Zone Tower of Terror from Disney's Hollywood Studios tries to take another step toward defending its title, against Cedar Point's Maverick. [Update: That poll's down for a bit while we deal with some obvious vote-stuffing issues.] [Update 2: It's back up now. See comments below, or this post.]

While we welcome voters from other websites, we ask you to take a look at the comments below before casting your votes. Thoughtful votes help make this a better tournament.

Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

The last remaining Cedar Fair coasters, not from Cedar Point, square off as Kings Island's The Beast takes on Knott's Berry Farm's Xcelerator.

Next up, it's an all-Universal Orlando battle, with Revenge of the Mummy going against Dueling Dragons – Ice.

And we wrap up the day with what promises to be another heated battle, this time between beloved Disney movie franchises. It's Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean versus Hollywood Studios' Toy Story Midway Mania.

March 27, 2009 at 7:24 AM · Maverick is a thrilling and fun new roller coaster that doesn't take you to any extremes, but makes you have a good time. The ride is non-stop action never giving you a break from the fun. For those of you who have never ridden, it is one of the most exhilarating coaster I have ever been on.

Tower of Terror is a fun ride, but in reality, no different than a glorified drop tower. The theming is good, but the ride is way too short.

From the launched lift, 95 degree drop, the second launch, and inversions, Maverick is the superior ride.

March 27, 2009 at 7:38 AM · Sorry Robert, I was too busy dancing to the MIB theme song:

"Let me see ya just bounce with me,
just bounce with me,
just bounce with me,

Come on ...

Let me see ya just slide with me,
just slide with me,,
just slide with me,

Let me see ya take a walk with me,
just walk with me,
just walk with me.

Now make your neck work ... and FREEZE!

Here, come the Men In Black .... Galaxy Defenders!

March 27, 2009 at 7:36 AM · I also forgot for those who have never been on Maverick, go youtube "maverick cedar point" and watch the POV. It really is an incredible roller coaster.
March 27, 2009 at 7:41 AM · All the fight has gone out of me after losing my petition to send Everest and its non-moving Yeti to the showers yesterday. Allowing a broken attraction to advance to the Sweet 16 is a travesty. I am very disappointed in all of you! =P

Anyway, today is pretty easy:

Tower of Terror - If you are a fan of themed, narrative attractions, you have no choice but to support what may be the best example of the genre in the world today. Plus you owe it to Rod Serling's memory to vote for The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. I am sure the Maverick is great, but as it is not even the greatest coaster in its own park (Millennium Force still holds that honor), it does not deserve a win today.

Da Beast - The longest wooden coaster in the world should not lose to a short, one trick pony like Xcelerator.

The Mummy - There is no debate, the Mummy is the superior attraction. It may not be a better coaster, but it is a better experience. ICE, without FIRE, should not have made it out of the first round.

Pirates - Perhaps the best theme park attraction of all time should never lose to a video game disguised as a ride. Throw in lunch at the Blue Bayou and a Monte Cristo sandwich (turkey, ham, and swiss cheese in a battered egg bread, lightly fried to a golden brown), and you have a theme park event without peer. For those who have not ridden the Disneyland version of PIRATES, trust me...it is an AMAZING experience. Pardon the pun, but it blows the WDW version out of the water.

ALT-TABBING back to work now. Have fun!

March 27, 2009 at 7:39 AM · Midway Mania over Pirates?

Really? A shooter game over one of the best dark rides?

WHY????

I like them both anyway! Tower of Terror is theming and thrill at its finest!

March 27, 2009 at 7:45 AM · Dang! I'm sweating now!! Did you see how many comments were posted yesterday!?

And I'm still humming the MIB song thanks to TH... "send me no forget-me-nots" - oh...wait...that's the song that Mr. Smith ripped off... but GO MIB!!!!

Maverick - perfection. Yes, it's not an immersed theme and there are many arguments for theme AND thrills. TOT is awesome and I ride it multiple times during my visits to Disney. This one came down to my "if both rides were in the same park, which attraction would I ride more often?" test. Folks - it's Maverick. I'm bringing TOT down! Go Cedar Point!!

I'm glad to see early voters understand the power of the Beast. Simply an AWESOME and hair raising experience. Love Xcelerator, but Beast is my 2nd favorite woodie (RIP Thunderhead...).

Now - let's reincorporate the theme argument with the thrills. I love the Dragons, but get bored with it after about five rides. Revenge of the Mummy thrills me every single time and I'll often ride it 10x a day per visit. It's themed well, has a thrilling (although short) roller coaster element that lifts me from my seat every time. Even the employees continue their hilarious "evil look" in the loading area. Plus, you've got to love the slight butterflies you get when you push backward only 20 feet. I WANT MY MUMMY!!

I think almost everyone would agree on this site that Pirates is an "attraction" (to use Disney terms) that has really never been duplicated. Yes, Toy Story is amazing. But sometimes the classic remains the tried and true winner for all-encompassing thrills and themeing. I'm surprised Pirates is already behind as to me, it is one of the best overall attractions ever constructed.

[and James - I kept my promise and attempted to vote out Disco Yeti. Alas, the Disney voters are out in droves...]

March 27, 2009 at 7:46 AM · Hey, if I gotta wait an hour and a half to get on a ride I want it to last more than 10 seconds. Maverick all the way. And that would mean the Beast will win over the X.
March 27, 2009 at 7:46 AM · WOW, it's getting tough! What a great bracket! I picked Indy in my bracket because I thought it would get through but I am glad to see MIB get past it! GO MIB!

LOL @ TH! That was hilarious! Thanks for the laugh!

And don't worry James, the Yeti's day of FAIL is appointed and on its way! :)

March 27, 2009 at 7:49 AM · Wait! Thanks to James, Anthony and me, Pirates is back in the lead!! (Funny that the 3 of us posted simulataneously!!)
March 27, 2009 at 7:51 AM · Sorry forgot to comment on today's brakcet! :)

Beast rules the woodies! Although Voyager at Holiday World was amazing and I look forward to the chance to experience it again.

One of the Dragons vs Mummy is tough. I love both rides for different reasons. Theming is great in both. I guess I'll take Mummy for it's loading area, intro to the Mummy area, and ending.

I hear you guys about Maverick. I was torn but went with HM. It's an icon at DHS and stands above the other attractions. Maverick gets lost in the jumble of steel at CP. Still a great ride though, don't get me wrong.

Pirates, nuff said.

March 27, 2009 at 7:55 AM · Scottland/Anthony, if Pirates loses this early in the tournament I am turning in my heart-shaped TPI Badge and moving to Siberia where there are no theme parks or internet connections!
March 27, 2009 at 7:56 AM · 'Revenge of the Mummy' is gonna waltz into the final four. Assuming the undead dance.

Speaking of dancing!

"Let me see ya just bounce with me,
just bounce with me,
just bounce with me,

Come on ...

Let me see ya just slide with me,
just slide with me,,
just slide with me,

Let me see ya take a walk with me,
just walk with me,
just walk with me.

Now make your neck work ... and FREEZE!

Here, come the Men In Black .... Galaxy Defenders!

March 27, 2009 at 7:58 AM · Where did that final surge of votes for MIB come from this morning?

And where are the Disney fans? Have they not woken up yet? It's still early in the voting but how can Maverick be beating ToT by so much? I'm thinking there's a lot of Spidey fans out there looking for revenge and just voting against ToT.

March 27, 2009 at 8:19 AM · The voting is fast and furious this AM....never seen anything like it.
March 27, 2009 at 8:20 AM · Not to Worry, all the Disney Fans are at pin collecting conference this morning, I'm sure by 3:00 TOT will be crushing Maverick.

The voting is nuts this year. I'm very surprised to see ICE over Mummy right now. Ice is the weaker of the two DD in my opinion and Mummy is a strong strong Coaster/darkride.

Try and remember to vote with year heart, don't be biased.

March 27, 2009 at 8:29 AM · There are more than 100 dimensional animated figures in 'Men In Black: Alien Attack.' Apparently a bunch of them got ahold of some lap tops this morning!

(Chuckle)

March 27, 2009 at 8:47 AM · Personally, I'm glad Tower of Terror is out. I'd hate to see the same mistake made last year.
March 27, 2009 at 8:48 AM · We have some obvious gaming going on in the ToT/Maverick poll. So I've pulled that one down for the time being.
March 27, 2009 at 9:05 AM · When I came into work this morning...I live on the east coast...I checked the results and it had Indiana Jones the winner. How MIB WIN?
March 27, 2009 at 9:14 AM · Polls close shortly after 7am Pacific Time.
March 27, 2009 at 9:27 AM · Interesting...never knew anyone to cheat on this stuff before...say it ain't so, Joe!
March 27, 2009 at 9:17 AM · There must have been some cheating going on with the Tower. 520 votes and I cant even vote for it!
March 27, 2009 at 9:17 AM · Wow, I guess when people have to resort to "cheating" on something like this, it is time for me to bow out.
March 27, 2009 at 9:18 AM · It look like word has gotten out big time to CPoint fans that Maverick is in a contest today - ( someone said it's not the most popular at CP some would disagree with that - it always has a line, - ALWAYS!)

Perhaps from the web side there is gaming and it can be seen, a shame if that's true, but from looking at the websites there is a big push to get Maverick fans voting - and that's not gaming just participation - right?

Vote Beast - 30th year anniversary!!!

March 27, 2009 at 9:19 AM · Thanks for your reply Robert...I did not relize they closed in the morning.
March 27, 2009 at 9:19 AM · Okay, I've reopened the poll.

Here's the deal, the Cedar Point website is linking to today's vote, and encouraging people to vote for Maverick. Upon further review... that's fair game.

Disney fans, if you want Tower of Terror to advance, you'd best be getting as many Disney fan sites to link to the poll to counter Cedar Point's efforts.

Same goes for other votes down the line.

March 27, 2009 at 9:24 AM · Wow...that is awesome we got Cedar Fair's interest on our friendly neighborhood website! I am impressed they care so much!

In case you are wondering, the link is here.

I rescind my previous comment. Kudos to Cedar Fair for getting involved. Almost makes me want to change my vote!

March 27, 2009 at 9:30 AM · Is it me or does anyone else picture the Cedar Point Fanboys as a bunch of angrey 17-20 year olds with Ohio State jerseys and beer bongs?
March 27, 2009 at 9:39 AM · Why exactly did the Maverick/TOT voting close? I understand if you think that there are some shenanigans going on, but can you honestly say that you would close the poll if TOT was ahead by that much? I think you are underestimating the ability of the Cedar Point fanbase to mobilize. There are a few here with the ability to rally the troops.

When the poll opens back up, Maverick will get my vote. Lots of elements, a nice queue with some theme, and just plain fun. Tower of Terror is one of the better Disney attractions. What's is nice is that they can change the drop sequence. They did a good job here..it's a great immersive ride....the first couple of times you ride it. The story is interesting, and you are completely engrossed in the ride. After that first couple of rides, it becomes the world's best drop tower. There's a common saying among producers and record label people when working with new talent. It goes like this..."Don't bore us, get to the chorus". Maverick is nonstop fun and excitement from beginning to end, while waiting in a long line and sitting through the same movie and the same effects again and again to get the payoff at the end of TOT becomes work.

The Beast gets the vote, hands down over Xcelerator. This year marks 30 years of The Beast...it's never has gotten old, never will. The helix at the end of the ride alone wins out over Xcelerator.

The Mummy wins out over Ice. I stand by my opinion that Dueling Dragons is not even a top 5 inverted coaster, and is in this tournament because it resides in Universal Studios. DD is a capable B&M coaster, but so are a few others that didn't make the cut.

The last one is tough for me. Toy Story is a more interactive attraction, Pirates is highly nostalgic and has stood the test of time. I went with Pirates...I guess when it comes down to it, Toy Story is good, but I can play video games at home.

Go Maverick....I can see the micebrain scrambling now

March 27, 2009 at 9:42 AM · I voted for Maverick because it is one of the new coasters that i have seen. It just adds to the amazing rides that CP already had. A day at CP isnt the same if you do not ride the Maverick. I rode it 5X on my last and I'm sure that I will ride it more this summer since i am actually working at CP. I am a CP fan through and through.

As for the other rides, I don't know what they are like since I haven't ever been to any of those parks. Darien Lake and CP are the only two I've been to (I know it is a shame) unless you count Sea Breeze in Rochester to be an amusement park with its measely two roller coasters.

March 27, 2009 at 9:50 AM · At first I wasn't sure if Cedar Point posting the link was indeed "fair game." But then Robert posted the article regarding the situation right smack on the home page.

For whatever my opinion is worth, Theme Park Insider is the BEST site related to the industry. And even if some disagree, it can't be denied that it is a hub of news and information related to parks and attractions..Certainly the major players (Disney, Sea World and Universal) should keep an eye on what is going on at the site -- ESPECIALLY DURING THE ANNUAL TOURNAMENT.

And fair warning to Cedar Point, paraphrasing that Japanese general after Pearl Harbor: "You may have just awoken, a sleeping giant ... or two."

March 27, 2009 at 9:51 AM · I think with Cedar Point linking to the poll makes this just a big joke of a poll!!!!!!

The poll was excellant, and maverick is a excellant coaster, but if you are going to have companies link to the poll. it makes the poll of little use IMHO.

March 27, 2009 at 9:51 AM · Brian - I'll turn 40 this year, work as a director in the financial industry, do not drink beer, went to university in California and live all the way in the theme park wasteland of Seattle. Cedar Point is one of my absolute favorite places on the planet. If I could travel there for a week every year I would. There's more than some 17-20 year-old frat boy fans out there! ;-) GO CEDAR POINT!!
March 27, 2009 at 9:53 AM · (Regarding Cedar Point fans/regulars) Hey - many of us are out of our 20s, *Many* of us are Michigan fans (yeah, there are a few buckeye fans around), and most of us drink our beer out of bottles (it tastes way better!)

(Having fun with my fellow Ohioans who route for osu)

March 27, 2009 at 9:55 AM · Maverick is one of the best rides in the park. Maverick is non-stop fun from the time you buckle yourself in to when you get off. Even waiting in the queue is a experience. Also The Beast is the greatest wooden coaster ever built and it definitely bets Xcelerator!
March 27, 2009 at 10:27 AM · To those crying about Cedar Point fans posting their opinion...get over yourselves. I for one couldn't be happier that this tournament has officially become competitive.

By the way Brian to help break the mold of Cedar Point fans so to speak...I'm married, 28 with 3 kids, all from the same mother, my lovely wife of 8 years this year. I do drink beer, import beer that is...out of a frosty mug, or sometimes out of the bottle if the mood strikes me. If it makes you feel better though, I like wine as well. I bleed scarlet and gray, but have never hit the beer bong.

This is a democratic, opinion based poll in which Cedar Point rides are participating, and I don't think that Disney fans, or some on this site, have a clue as to the size and fierce loyalty of Cedar Point's fanbase. People love Cedar Point and it's rides, just as people love Disney and their rides, and just because the ride isn't a superthemed storyteller doesn't mean it isn't popular. This is a wakeup call to those who think the industry doesn't really exist outside of Florida and California.

Go Bucks

March 27, 2009 at 10:13 AM · go maverick cedar point rocks
March 27, 2009 at 10:33 AM · The fact that ICE is even COMPETITIVE with 'Revenge of the Mummy' is ridiculous.

Mummy rules! Or it should!

March 27, 2009 at 10:40 AM · As much of a homer as I usually am when it comes to Cedar Point, ToT is more exciting overall then Maverick. Someone mentioned that ToT is just a glorfied drop tower but that is just the thing; Disney takes time to glorify their attractions and make them unique while Cedar Point (as much as I love the place) just bulldozes trees, puts up some steel and calls it a day.
March 27, 2009 at 10:47 AM · Tough one today - good to see some proper competition though!

Went for Pirates instead of TSMM - brilliant ride overall and also for the nostalgic value. I agree that DL's version is superior to WDW but neither can compete with the one in Paris. Toy Story is an example of a new ride that shows what Disney can still do when they put their mind to it - be happy if they keep to that standard!

Mummy also got my vote because as already stated Ice needs Fire to be as good as it is.

As for the biggy, I went with ToT because it is an attraction that has something for everybody - theme and a story alongside some serious thrills!

Be good to see all of the big companies advertise this poll just like Cedar Fair has done:

'WHAT WILL YOU CELEBRATE TODAY?... TPI BEST RIDE IN AMERICA TOURNAMENT OF COURSE!'

Oh and Robert, I used to be a member on this but can't remember my log in. I requested another one but no word yet - looks like you just don't want a Scotsman here!

March 27, 2009 at 10:52 AM · I guess the question now becomes....Maverick or Millennium Force for the Best Ride in North America?
March 27, 2009 at 11:03 AM · James - therein lies a very good question. I'll be pondering that one...
March 27, 2009 at 11:12 AM · I am exhausted from yesterday and the best I can say is that my choices mirror James'.

Congratulations TH, on a well-fought and hard won victory.
Wrong as it may be.:)

At least we can agree that ICE has no business losing to the Mummy.

Maverick is a very good coaster in a park with some tremendous coasters. It can not compete with the best drop tower in the world. Nevertheless, it seems irrelevant as the coaster-heads seem to be out in force to bring down anything with boring themes or detail.

The lack of well-rounded theme park fans is now hurting the quality themed rides. I suppose all is fair considering the sacrilege that was performed to Dollywood, who is the real victim here.

The Disney fans have been extremely pacifistic this year. We are barely hearing from them in the comments. I suppose the stereotypes are true. The Disney fans are meek people who live in a Fantasyland while coaster fans are aggressive people who have ADD. It is all sad. There are tremendous rides of both ilk and everyone should visit as many different parks as possible and appreciate the best of both worlds. Okay, diatribe over.

March 27, 2009 at 11:18 AM · If you lose your log-in, message me from http://www.themeparkinsider.com/contact, using the e-mail address with which you registered.
March 27, 2009 at 11:25 AM · When the voting was temporarily shut down, I mistakenly assumed that someone was somehow cheating or something. I take back my earlier comments.

At any rate, I find all the comments completely hilarious. It's really not going to ruin my vacation or my fun however this tournament turns out. Hopefully the more people that turn out will generate some interest in actually attending some of these parks. I don't protest to be a Disney, Universal or Cedar Point nut... I just like taking vacations to theme/amusement parks and having fun. As I've stated before, way out here in Washington State, we have NOTHING. Our plan is to hit up Cedar Point at some point in the future. Hearing all the people voting and defending this park, on top of the research I've done, makes me even more excited to vacation at this park one day.

Woo Hoo!

March 27, 2009 at 11:39 AM · You're right DD, the more folks get involved, the better off we will all be.

Raul, you make a good point as well. Previously this contest was too Disney biased, now it has gone way over to the other side. We need a happy medium....but, at least we know one company (Cedar Fair) pays attention to this website.

Therefore...

CEDAR FAIR MGMT: please keep the love flowing toward my home park, Worlds of Fun. We need more coasters, and that is what you are good at! Send more coasters to Kansas City!!!

March 27, 2009 at 11:40 AM · Firstly, I can't believe TOT is loosing so badly! It has my vote and I would argue that it is far superior to the average ride of its type. The ride incorporates several drops, takes place indoors with the odd exciting view outside and has a great theme. The indoor queuing area is amazing and the outdoors isn't bad either. This would certainly be in my top five theme park rides. I haven't been on Maverick and wouldn't normally vote, but think TOT needs my help. I have done a bit of research on Maverick and it does look brilliant, but even if I rode I still think TOT would have the edge.

Ice v The Mummy would be Mummy. Ice and fire are great as a pair, but on their own I don't think I would rate them so highly. The mummy is fab all that fire and all the effects. OK so its not the best roller coaster but the atmosphere, the effects and the brilliant ending make up for it.

March 27, 2009 at 11:48 AM · Maverick and Tower of Terror are both just plain fun rides. Nothing really special about either. Of course ToT has incredible theming, but the ride really wouldn't be anything without it. The theming plus the ride makes it fun. In Mavericks case, there is just enough theming to add something to it, and for the most part, the themeing comes from the surroundings of the ride. The railroad, trees, water hazards, Lake Erie, etc. The tunnel, and spinning through the canyons and corrals of Maverick, combined with the launch and the incredible drop puts it just above Tower of Terror.

The other rides weren't so close.

Beast and Xcel. There is a reason it's called the beast. The way it interacts with its enviroment make it a classic.
Mummy and Ice. The ride of the Mummy itself is very dissapointing. The theming doesn't add much of any fear or fun factor.
Pirates and Toy Story. Really? Pirates is a Disney classic...

March 27, 2009 at 11:52 AM · Raul, you shouldn't stereotype, because they aren't true...although with the ADD comment, you aren't exactly breaking the one that I've heard before about snobbish Disney fans.

I am a well rounded theme park fan, who prefers roller coasters. I appreciate themed rides and have voted for some of them in this tournament, but the fact that I don't prefer them doesn't mean that I or anyone else has a learning disability. Disney fans have enjoyed expressing their opinion on this site with little or no opposition for a long time. This tournament has brought in a number of people who disagree with that opinion, and that's really not a bad thing.

I totally agree that people should experience as many parks as possible. They all have something different to offer, but that's just the thing. They aren't necessarily better, just different, and people have and are entitled to, their own opinions. Let's keep the fight clean eh?

March 27, 2009 at 12:08 PM · If you've ever shaken a can of spray paint and wondered what it's like to be the little metal ball inside the can, then Tower of Terror is the ride for you.

For anyone else, Maverick rules.

March 27, 2009 at 12:22 PM · Well I'm glad to see that all the Cedar Point fans aren’t 17-20 year old frat boys. In all seriousness, it's very refreshing to see a non Disney ride do so well.

It's great to see a park like Cedar Point throw around its weight once in a while like this. We here so much from Disney and Universal but sometimes forget about the Giant from the north. Yes it's an amusement park not a Theme park, but what it delivers in thrills far out weights the lack of themeing.

I do have a bad feeling about what has happened today with Cedar Pont linking its site to this tourney. We all know if the Disney fans decide to do the same consider this thing over. There are countless Disney sites with people gushing about their love for the mouse, if they get wind of their rides losing we are all in trouble for seeing an unbiased tourney.

March 27, 2009 at 12:25 PM · Mwhahahaha! The Cedar Fair Freight Train can not be stopped!
March 27, 2009 at 12:44 PM · HA!

This is hilarious! I'm pissed that Tower is losing, but good for CP for recognizing the site.

AS IF the #1 seed is losing to some CP coaster! Hilarious. There goes my 3rd final four pick. I only have Spidey left if Tower loses.

What worries me is that the Disney/Uni fans will chime in and vote simply out of disdain for certain losses and an undeserving ride (like Soarin' or Dueling Dragons: Ice) will win.

My votes:

Tower over Maverick (guess it doesn't matter, though!)
Beast over Xcelerator
Mummy over Ice (both really aren't that fantastic, but Mummy takes it)
Pirates over Midway

March 27, 2009 at 12:45 PM · THAT IS TOTALLY UNFAIR!!!!!!!!! Seriously- Maverick? Against Tower of Terror? The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror- even the name sounds better than Maverick!!!!!!!!!!! If Cedar Point wants to play that game, then so be it. Deep down, however, Disney does, and will always, rule the theme park industry. Tower of Terror deserves a spot in the next round, and it's only because someone decided to post the poll on a differnet website that it won't??? A plain and boring roller coaster, against the life-like, incredibly detailed, high-screamin', terrorizing, twilight zoning, haunted, incredible, and outstanding Twilight Zone Tower of Terror!!!!!! The tower is in control- everyone's got to vote for it! GO DISNEY!!!!!!!!!
March 27, 2009 at 12:47 PM · I find interesting the effect of the Cedar Point influx on the "downticket" races. Remember that early lead Toy Story had? Gone now.
March 27, 2009 at 1:00 PM · I seriously can't believe The Tower of Terror is losing to Maverick. Although Maverick is a great coaster it's nothing in comparison to the vastly detailed Tower.

The Tower of Terror isn't an indoor drop tower as some have been saying, firstly the drops aren't freefall as they are pushed faster than gravity using a very unique and technologically advanced ride system.

C'mon Disney Fans, time to show your faces!

March 27, 2009 at 1:17 PM · I am starting to see messages on Disney fan sites pop up about this tournament....it may not be over yet. The polls stay open until 7 AM PDT.

Also, starting to see a lot of new names show up...members since March 27, 2009. Cool. Welcome to the site, folks!

On a side note, I think our quiet, little corner of the world may have just blown up into something none of us ever imagined....

March 27, 2009 at 1:19 PM · Have you guys been on Maverick, or even visited Cedar Point? The park is fantastic and offers so much. When you go to Cedar Point, you have fun. Pure, enjoyable, fun. No complex stories to follow or intense thinking on the guests' part. You don't have to keep track of what 'land' your in, you get to choose what type of fun you want to experience next.

Maverick is a great coaster that is great for everyone in the family. Cedar Point, along with Maverick, don't have any of the 'fluff' that the theme parks contain, just fun!

March 27, 2009 at 1:27 PM · Sadly, it is over James. Almost as many people have voted for Tom Cruise in this round as had voted in the final for the 2008 tournament. Robert, on the other hand, must be ecstatic. He is getting a boat load of hits.

I now have no idea what the final four will look like.

March 27, 2009 at 1:35 PM · If only the "Maverick" had gotten this much support on November 4! I kid...dont wanna start any political discussions lol
March 27, 2009 at 1:44 PM · Most of us have been to all sorts of parks, Cedar Point included. Most of us even have roller coaster heavy parks in our local towns. Most of us love coasters. Those who are voting for Tower of Terror aren't doing it because they think Maverick is a lousy coaster, or that Cedar Point is a lousy park. No, those voting for ToT just like the full package of sight, sounds, and thrills offered by a fully immersive attraction (what you call "fluff"). And that's okay. You can like coasters and non-coasters. They are not mutually exclusive. You can like Disney and Cedar Point. There is nothing wrong with liking attractions at both parks. It is not like Maverick rules and ToT sucks, or vice versa. They are both excellent attractions.

Note: the height requirement on Maverick is 52"...in my family of 5, two would be left out. Maverick is not what I would consider a whole-family attraction.

Another note: when it comes to choosing between two excellent attractions, sometimes the fun is in the debate. Sadly, I fear this debate is turning into a Cedar Point versus Disney discussion, which is just too bad. Yesterday was a lot more fun. I don't want to do the whole Disney/Cedar Point debate...again.

March 27, 2009 at 1:38 PM · Mike K, I'd hardly call the Tower's, or any other Disney attractions story complex. Neither would I say it is hard to keep track of what land your in at any theme park.

I like Cedar Point, I like Maverick, but you'll see a lot of attractions in coming years of the same quality as Maverick. On the other hand not many themed attractions are even half as good as Tower and I expect that to be the case for a number of years to come.

My original prediction for the final four was
Tower of Terror
Expedition Everest
Space Mountain
The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman

Looks like we'll be getting a lot more steel in the finals, which certainly isn't a bad thing, even if it is a surprise.

March 27, 2009 at 2:09 PM · I love March Madness. I do know this too. Disney isn't the only park with multiple fansites. There is more than one "sleeping giant", as someone previously put it. Besides, I'm pretty sure that some Disney sites have been linked here for quite a while.

James, this contest (todays at least) is coming down to Cedar Point vs. Disney. Unfortunately it seems that not everyone welcomes a crowd of "dissenters". Frankly, all I've seen are Disney fans complaining and Cedar Point fans either defending themselves or voicing their opinion with the occasional smack talk we all love...at least when it's in our favor right?. The dynamic of the tournament has changed, the voters in the north have finally been properly informed, and I guess we will see how big the Disney fanbase really is.

Congrats again Robert on the big turnout.

March 27, 2009 at 2:28 PM · I had to choose Maverick -- I like it. Although it is too rough, and the restraint padding is too little, so it hurts my ears.

It's my 3rd-favorite ride in Cedar Point, after Mean Streak and Millenium Force (I just love wooden coasters). MS is the one I ride again and again, although that is helped by the fact that when I am there, there is no line for MS.

So of course I also recommend The Beast. It's the ride I do over and over when I'm at KI. That and Son of Beast -- although I'm guessing I'm really going to like the new coaster.

Can't say who to vote for in the other two brackets, never ridden any of them.

March 27, 2009 at 2:36 PM · James I agree with what you said about our little quiet corner of the net turning into something we could never imagine. I always kinda liked that there was a small group of people contributing on here, I just hope with this influx of new faces things don't start to get ugly. Congrats to Robert for the success of this tourney.

On a different note, how in the Hell is Ice beating Mummy? You won't find a bigger DD fan than me but even I have to say Mummy is an overall better ride than Ice alone. Ice is turning into the George Mason of this year’s tournament.

March 27, 2009 at 2:41 PM · I have nothing against Disney, or any parks for that matter. ToT is a great ride that I would never miss when I visit the Disney Parks. My basis is on which ride I would wait longer for, and Maverick takes it.

I don't feel it is a debate of Dis/CP, but rather theme/amusement. The Mummy/Dragons race is making me wonder too, I don't get it. Maybe the Pirates fans are voting Dragons for an easy win next round?

March 27, 2009 at 2:56 PM · The Mummy Better then a B&M Invert, you are all crazy. It is an ok experience, but the ride itself is far from good, and without the effects and what not it would just suck. Now with Dragons you could put that ride in any park with no theme and it would be a winner!
March 27, 2009 at 3:14 PM · Wow, it looks like last year's champion won't even make it to the Sweet 16. I'm certainly not complaining though, because if I think any ride has a right to outst TOT early, it's the Maverick.
March 27, 2009 at 3:08 PM · I love Disney, but Maverick is just a lot more thrilling than Tower of Terror. Like one other voter stated, I would wait for hours to ride Maverick. After a couple of rides on Tower, it just loses a bit of its pizazz.

The next one was actually a difficult choice for me. An excellent woodie over intense acceleration. I went for the woodie...GO BEAST!

The next pick was also difficult, but I took DD-Ice over Mummy. If Mummy wins this round I'll be just as excited though because it is an absolutely awesome ride!

My last pick had to go with Toy Story. I love Pirates, but Toy Story is a BLAST!

March 27, 2009 at 3:14 PM · While I certainly agree that fair is fair, but a whole lot of fun has been sucked out of a tournament because a corporation is using it as an avenue for marketing.

The fact that Disney And Universal have not made the same effort as Cedar Point clearly means that a victory by Maverick would be a hollow victory ... at best.

March 27, 2009 at 3:19 PM · Disney and Universal don't have time for this stuff...they are too busy running their parks and making money. Cedar Point has the day off...they're bored. And they still only mustered 1500+ votes.
March 27, 2009 at 3:35 PM · TH Creative- While I agree that the Cedar Point link probably messed up the voting this round, overall I think it will be a good thing because more theme/amusement park fans will be introduced to the site and may continue to be active members after the competition. In a site where information comes from the site visitors, exposure is usually a good thing.

My theory as to why the mouse fans aren't turning out is that Disney and Universal are primarily vacation destinations. On the other hand, Cedar Point is more of a local park (although it has a world wide reputation) and less of a tourist destination and thus has more of a passionate fan-base, people who are willing to take the time and support their park.

And more than 70 comments? Wow!

March 27, 2009 at 3:42 PM · It might be interesting if we all had to "pre register" to be a voter for future tournaments. Kind of like the Academy for the Oscars.

Note - As a poster to this site for a few years, I must say that I love ALL theme and amusement parks. I'm truly voting for my favorite rides - regardless of the park they're in. I happen to enjoy Maverick more than TOT and Mummy more than Ice - and that's a switch on theme and thrills right there. I love Cedar Point and Disneyworld and Busch Gardens and Universal Orlando and Six Flags Great America AND Dollywood!! (did I win the lottery yet so I can take everyone to Pigeon Forge?)

Now, just imagine TOT, Pirates, Maverick, Toy Story, Dragon:Ice and Mummy all in the same park. I think I just wet myself.

March 27, 2009 at 3:47 PM · Although I think it is cool Cedar Point recognized TPI, I really wish we could have not been recognized so as to see what would happen when the whole CP community comes over! I gave TOT some love as it looks like it has gotten none!
March 27, 2009 at 4:37 PM · Scottland, I was thinking the same thing. Am mulling that one over for next year.

But I probably won't. I like having more folks around the site. I'm not sweating one day of voting affecting the tone of the site. In fact, I've been lining up some interviews and features that I think long-time TPI fans will quite enjoy.

Also, remember, there are no Cedar Point rides in tomorrow's voting. ;-)

March 27, 2009 at 4:47 PM · i was at cedar point the same month that the maverick opened. i got the commemorative t-shirt. the ride is incredible. nothing like it anywhere else. can't wait to go back!!
March 27, 2009 at 5:32 PM · My next question is, which park will be the next to link up? Hate on Cedar Point all you want, but they A) connected their fans with the tournament, B) generated increased interest in their park, and C) demonstrated to people on this site that they exist, and exist big.

I was just reading the thread, and I find it hilarious. In the morning it was, "I'm sure that by 3:00 TOT will be crushing Maverick". and "There is some obvious gaming going on in the TOT/Maverick poll", to "You may have just awoken a sleeping giant", to "Cedar Point fans are agressive people with ADD", to "ITS NOT FAIR!", to "they're using the competition for marketing", to "Disney/Universal doesn't have time...Cedar Point has the day off and nothing better to do", to "they messed up the voting."

Word to Disney/Universal fans, Cedar Point fans will "mess up" the voting for the rest of the tournament. If you want your attraction to win, get out the vote. Quit crying and making excuses, and wake up that sleeping giant of a Disney fanbase.

By the way Cedar Point fans, don't be afraid to participate and vote in all the matchups.

March 27, 2009 at 5:34 PM · Hey all, first I've ever seen this website, and I'm one of those CP fans who was called over by the posting on the CP website. Sorry if that bothers any of you! :)
However, I have to say, I am a roller coaster enthusiast who has been to many parks. At 28, I'm fairly well traveled, and have even been to an amusement park in England.
I have to make a comment about the posting on Cedar Points website. I'd like to point out that it was posted on a Blog, not on the MAIN page of Cedar Point, not that that matters to many of you, but just for the point! :)
Also, I'd like to say I've been on both the Tower of Terror and Maverick, and for my money's worth, Tower of Terror is fun and does set the ride up better, but I definitely enjoy Maverick better. But hey, if I like a Disney/Universal ride I've been on better than a Cedar Point ride, I'll admit it!
March 27, 2009 at 6:07 PM · One of the CP Fan sites is linking heavily to the tournament as well. I think the CP Blog linking is great not only for Maverick, but TPI is going to grow from it. There are already new members that came from the blog, which is very healthy for the site.
March 27, 2009 at 6:57 PM · Derek, kudos on your play today. It was a vicious strike at the heart of true theme park fans everywhere, and a stunning shake up of the long time fans of this site. However, with the birth of your well orchestrated Cedar Point Hijack, came the inevitable afterbirth: the re-emergence of Jake Rivers. Please keep him under control.

Robert, I expect you will be keeping a close eye on Jake? We don't need a repeat of his last round of vulgarity and rudeness. In fact, you may have already zapped him since his comment seems to be gone. Kudos!

Audra, you are the kind of person we welcome on this site. We appreciate your position and your well thought out comments. Please feel free to hang out with us...we need a few more Cedar Point fans like you to keep the rest of us theme park geeks honest. I hope you stick around after the tournament as part of the TPI Family.

Lastly, the battle appears to be lost, but the war is not over. The Cedar Point community may have made one fatal mistake: they should have taken out Pirates today. Instead, they left a key attraction for the Disney Fanbase base to rally around. It will be interesting to see what happens next.

Disney, Universal, and Busch fans, I suggest you do as Derek says and get the word out...we have a war on our hands!

March 27, 2009 at 6:20 PM · I would NEVER want to change ANYTHING about this tournament that would undermine Mr. Niles' success. His commitment to this site has been extraordinary. It is a source of entertainment -- the same as a favorite television show or film. I appreciate his effort.

Having said that (and considering the circumstance between 'Tower of Terror' and 'Maverick') I revert back to the post that TPI regular James Rao offered up: "As Marty Sklar, the international ambassador for Walt Disney Imagineering, once said, "We're in the business of telling great stories, and great stories never grow old. In the end, a roller coaster is just a roller coaster."

Robert ought to do what's best for his own interest in the site. He has invested far too much to walk away from any opportunity.

At the same time, 'Maverick's' (ahem) "victory" is, at the very best, weak -- no matter the margin.

March 27, 2009 at 6:21 PM · I know I may sound a little bitter as Tower is getting beaten but the link posted to the CP fan site seems to basically say 'Vote for any Cedar Fair attraction you can, we need to beat Disney'.

I don't know, it just seems like this kind of voting may distort the votes in later rounds.

I'm certainly enjoying the competition though, a good mixture of theme and amusement park fans would be good though, rather than having lots from one side and not many from the others.

March 27, 2009 at 6:26 PM · Maverick dominates Tower of Terror if you're a thrill ride enthusiast. I don't understand how Tower of Terror could have won last year over all the amazing coasters in the bracket. I would personally take Millennium Force over any other ride in this bracket because it is literally the best coaster on the planet. The Superman coaster that always gets first for the Golden Ticket Awards is nothing compared the the Cedar Point's monster.
March 27, 2009 at 6:46 PM · ROTM making a comeback....keep it up gang...at least in this battle the better attraction should win!

CP VOTERS: please scroll through the comments and read DEREK POTTER's first entry today as he is the leader of the CP Fan Club on this site. He wrote: "The Mummy wins out over Ice. I stand by my opinion that Dueling Dragons is not even a top 5 inverted coaster, and is in this tournament because it resides in Universal Studios."

Follow his lead and VOTE FOR THE MUMMY!

March 27, 2009 at 7:41 PM · My apologies James for the return of Jake Rivers. Note to Jake (and anyone else new)...your opinion will never be appreciated here unless it is conveyed with a little respect and some intellegence.

The notion that a lot of Cedar Point fans are voting for Maverick to somehow "smite" Disney just isn't true. They are voting for Maverick because they love to ride it...pure and simple. They love their home park, and Maverick happens to be one of the best attractions there. Just as a lot of people love Disney, a lot of people love Cedar Point. I know it's hard for some of you to wrap your mind around it, but I've been saying it for years. People love Cedar Point.

As for me, I'm sure that myself and another member of the site (whose name rhymes with Like J) will each be a little happier knowing that Cedar Point got some love, even if TOT somehow by the grace of God Almighty... removes a victory from it's butt. I raise my glass of Blue Moon (with an orange of course) for a toast to the voice of the masses.

March 27, 2009 at 7:44 PM · Just for information, Maverick was designed and originally was 48", Intamin changed the recommendation and Cedar Point followed that recommendation to change the minimum height to 52". My son is looking forward to riding it for the first time this year.
March 27, 2009 at 8:07 PM · Thanks, Derek, but I think Jake has already been silenced. Mr. Niles Rules!

John Stacy, welcome to the site, and thanks for the info. My oldest just hit the magical 54" number....the world is opening up for him now!!

Funny, I don't even know my kids' ages anymore, just their heights: 54", 50", and 44". ;)

March 27, 2009 at 8:20 PM · I think I'm a bit puzzled why it is surprising to so many of those commenting that any ride of the caliber of Maverick should be questioned because it is winning. ToT is a very good ride, but I know many people who don't even put it in their top ten. I'm just excited that there are more people who are voting. IMO it adds more of a balance and doesn't change in any way the validity of the contest.

There are many fans of TPI that love amusement parks, especially great parks such as Cedar Point, Six Flags Great Adventure, and Knoebels, and the exciting rides they offer. Just because Maverick is beating the pants off of Tower, it doesn't mean that ToT isn't a very acceptable runner-up.

Jeez, I didn't cry sour grapes in the first round when an phenomenal ride like El Toro lost to a overrated pedantic water flume! oops....just did, sorry. ;o)
(j/k...ok, ok...I enjoy the "pedantic water flume" but it is no El Toro)

Everyone just say congrats to the winner, get your votes ready for the next round, and enjoy the experience.

BTW, I have to say thanks to Robert for doing such an outstanding job on another year's contest.

March 27, 2009 at 8:25 PM · 2800 votes and nearing 100 comments....unreal. My congrats again on the success of this tournament.
March 27, 2009 at 8:57 PM · I just don't get how DD-Ice is hanging with The Mummy. I am a huge IOA fan, but there is no question that the Mummy is the better all around attraction. You understand you are just voting for the ICE layout, right? Not both FIRE and ICE...
March 27, 2009 at 9:04 PM · This round has me longing for the good old simpler days of the Disney vs. Universal debate...
March 27, 2009 at 9:12 PM · ToT losing? What has this world come to? I really have lost faith in the voting for these rides. Isn't it weird that there is SO many more votes for that grouping than others.

I see some TPI backlash for this ride in the future. Terrible, truly terrible! I tried seeing where CP threw the vote for anybody who went to their website. Is it still up there?

Sorry for sounding sour, but unlike MIB in which it was 1.Close and 2. Quite a debateable pairing. ToT should only lose to a couple of rides and this is not one of them!

March 27, 2009 at 9:11 PM · I read about the poll from the Cedar Point Facebook. I'm a huge Disney fan (I was at Disneyland last weekend for my birthday) but I had to vote for Maverick. Hands down. ToT is amazingly themed and has spectacular effects (at least at WDW, DL not so much) but Maverick is a real thrill.
March 27, 2009 at 9:13 PM · Anthony, where have you been all day? Been busy around here - lots of interesting stuff. You picked the wrong day to have a life!

Check the comments...Cedar Fair got involved today by putting a link to the tournament on Cedar Point's website. Got a lot of new folks checking us out. Comb you hair, fix your collar, and look sharp...we have some new friends!

March 27, 2009 at 9:20 PM · Sorry...I just can't stop posting...I want to be #100!!! Arrgh...wife wants to watch Terminator/Dollhouse. Shucks guys, I gotta go! See you tomorrow!
March 27, 2009 at 9:32 PM · So get this, I wake up early, vote early with nothing going strangely wrong. Check out my comment in the morning, I only talk about how Ice is close to the Mummy. I had to help with the Green celebration at the Disney Stores. Check them out in april! !

I had a super busy day today! Its good to see theme parks care what we think I guess.

March 27, 2009 at 9:44 PM · HAHA.

Oh man. I'm sorry guys. Jake Rivers didn't make a triumphant return. I'm Jake Rivers!

LOL. No, no - not the original one from the old days who was annoying as hell. I just created a fake profile of Jake today using a different e-mail and decided to upset the apple cart a little bit. I thought it would be a laugh.

I was gonna log in as him and explain myself, but Robert banned my alternative ego! I remember reading sometime last year that Robert hates Caps Lock comments, so I made sure to make my post full of terrible upper-cased grammar. HAHA. Great to see you banned the fake Jake - hopefully that means the real one is up the River without a paddle.

-- Fake Jake (The REAL Joshua Counsil)

... sorry, but I felt I had to do it.

March 27, 2009 at 11:33 PM · Joshua - you just gave me the best belly laugh! I truly thought Jake was back!!

Robert - this is such a blast. Thank you!!!!

March 27, 2009 at 11:38 PM · If the Mummy loses I swear that I won't be back...until tomorrow.

Number 100...beat you to it James.

March 28, 2009 at 5:00 AM · Josh...I almost asked Robert to cancel my account over your stunt! Oh, well, consider me duped twice yesterday! Once by a corporate sponsorship that led to stuffed ballots, and the second time by a fake Jake.

Makes sense though, do you really think Jake would have gotten out of prison so soon? I should have known...

And, Raul....GRRRRRRR......

Yesterday was not my best day.

March 28, 2009 at 6:37 AM · Mummy losing is actually a good thing (although it is just flat out wrong). Now the THEME PARK vote won't be split between Pirates and Mummy, so Pirates will skate into the final four with Maverick (presuming ballot stuffing helps it beat The Beast...which should NEVER happen). Either way it will be Disney vs Cedar Fair again. It will be fun to see if more corporate sponsorships come out for that battle or if only Cedar Fair will represent.

Disney fans...start getting the word out now, unless you want to see POTC lose to a...shudder...coaster.

Busch Fans, Millennium Force will be going against Sheikra on the 31st, so you also better start mobilizing now (normally I would vote for MF and its 300 foot drop, but after yesterday, I don't know....Busch Fans may have just pulled some support with their unexpected "underdog" role).

No matter what happens, let's see if we can get to 5000 votes, and 200 comments!

March 28, 2009 at 8:35 AM · What a day! I was stuck in meetings all day and missed the action! This tourney rocks! :D
March 28, 2009 at 9:28 AM · This is great. I'm going to have a tough time air time (Maverick) vs fun (Beast) in the next round.

Yes - I am a CP Fan. But first, I LIVE in Michigan, in fact in the D (Detroit for those of you south of the border). Yes - I am a UM fan GO BLUE! and no ADD here!

Looks like most of the issues are regarding coaster enthusiasts vs themed rides. Each have their place...but I do prefer coasters...been missing Beast, Flight of Fear, Fire Hawk, Gemini, Maverick, Millenium Force, Magnum, Top Thrill over this long cold winter...now it's time for the Thrill rides to open up!

Please :) continue to abuse my scarlet and gray neighbors in the state south of me... but leave KI and CP out of that abuse! They are the highlights of Ohio!

March 28, 2009 at 9:40 AM · Im completely shocked Tower of Terror went down to a Cedar Fair ride.
March 28, 2009 at 10:43 AM · I wouldn't be so sure about Maverick beating Beast. Cedar Point fans weren't the only ones informed about this tournament....
March 28, 2009 at 11:19 AM · Shock horror!!! Tower of Terror is out!! Definetely didn't see that one coming!
March 29, 2009 at 8:45 AM · wow, i didn't see tower of terror going so quick, they needed to make the pairings different to start because maverick and cedar point are amazing as well as Disney. For best rides head to Cedar Point but for overall vacation do Disney, I have been to Disney 6 times and live in Ohio so I am not just making up B.S. either.
March 29, 2009 at 9:52 AM · Maverick kills all other votes. The rush of the coaster flying past low-ground bends and all the airtime is amazing! I even say Maverick is better than Millennium Force!
March 30, 2009 at 1:19 PM · The Beast is not very fun and has few elements that are even remotely close to exciting. The best element it has is the double helix, but it is so rough its hard to enjoy. Maverick is non stop fun. If you have not had a chance to ride it, I suggest you make your way to CP. I also believe that Maverick is a better ride than Millennium Force.
